bomba em baxia

[ stories from lisbon - april 22, 2014 ]

my mother laughs as we pass some men sitting on a curb side by a shop. i look back and they look like construction workers. they're brazilian. she could tell by their accents. i asked her what they said and she said that they were discussing how much of a "bomb of a woman," i was. i ask her if that's good or bad and she laughs, "good. very good." i'd been seeing romance written in the eyes of so many portuguese men thus far, but they were all looking past me or around me at some slender figure. i don't think i'm made for european men - i'm an island woman, an amazon woman.
